Hi, Marcus...

I don't want to be rude or anything. I have read wiki and your replies
to this mailing list carefully about 50 times by now. and tried
different things on hx4700. Basically all combinations of kernels and
root images have been tested.
(I started on monday (30th of October).

Just looking at this reply of yours...

Where exactly is ipaq-pxa270 directory in
http://www.users.on.net/~marcusbrutus/ ???
Why does the hx4700 directory exist if nothing in there should not be
used anyway?

This directory is no longer mentioned in the instructions, and judging
by the links below, you are reading the latest version.

Now I start with the questions...

Chapter 1: Ramdiskrescue
To run Ramdiskrescue we need 5 files.
As I understand, currently (02-nov-2006) these 5 files for hx4700 are:
haret.exe
custom.txt
startup.txt
zImage...
ramdisk-rescue-0.6.4.....

yes

Links from http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/RamdiskRescue suggest
for hx4700...

http://belnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ramdisk-rescue/ramdisk-rescue-0.6.4.rootfs.ext2.gz
http://ramdisk-rescue.sourceforge.net/releases/0.6.4/custom.txt
http://ramdisk-rescue.sourceforge.net/releases/0.6.4/hx4700/startup.txt
http://ramdisk-rescue.sourceforge.net/releases/0.6.4/hx4700/zImage-2.6.16-hh5-ipaq-pxa270-20061028021958
http://www.handhelds.org/~pfalcon/haret-hacks/haret-0.3.8.exe

looks about right

These files must be in /linux/rescue on either SD or CF card. Correct?

yes

And for Familiar installation we need 2 files...
http://belnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ramdisk-rescue/zImage-2.6.15-hh2-ipaq-pxa270-20060923034420
quote: "Those with an hx4700 should use a [WWW]hx4700 kernel built by
Marcus that supports card-booting"

yes

second file depends on if you want opie or gpe...

http://familiar.handhelds.org/releases/v0.8.4/install/files/ipaq-pxa270/gpe-image-v0.8.4-ipaq-pxa270.rootfs.tar.bz2

or
http://familiar.handhelds.org/releases/v0.8.4/install/files/ipaq-pxa270/opie-image-v0.8.4-ipaq-pxa270.rootfs.tar.bz2

yes

These 2 files should go to /linux/rescue/image

yes

Now I have done that several times (different combinations of SD and CF
cards) and I end up with cant mount root file system hda2 or
mtdblock(0,0)... I don't remember exact error message...

That's a shame, after your long intro it would have been nice to
be able to solve the problem.

If you end up with the same message with _every_ combination then I
would suggest that the answer is right in front of you :)
Keep in mind that _none_ of the files you download need to be modified.

You don't mention whether you have failed to boot RR, or failed to boot
Familiar after installing with RR. Your summary of the error tends to
suggest the latter.

Since many people ask about the same thing all over again, I woud
suggest something...

I understand that it is not possible to write the exact links to needed
files into the wiki, because files change automatically, but wiki only
manually. Can we do a link page to the last known working files...

For Familiar downloads:
Maybe ... I just don't feel the need to do links to the download
images and create another download table for every combination of
Familar download, when Familiar already have a download page. The only
reason this doesn't work for hx4700 is because card-booting is not
  "officially" supported by this port.
Haret:
Is now direct (as of 0.3.8 release).
Ramdisk Rescue:
The initrd is hosted by sf.net in their FRS. That's about as direct
  as it gets.
The kernels and text files are hosted in the sf.net webspace for
RR and they _are_ direct links.

HOWEVER!!!
These links are for the latest stable release only.
There are not, and WILL NOT, be links in the wiki to individual revisions.

There are currently no development revisions for release because I'm
having a short holiday from RR (getting a few other tasks out of the way).

a la...

If you got hx4700, then put these files into... linux/rescue
If you want opie, then download this or gpe, then get that...

I was under the impression I had done that, maybe not as simply as you
put it. Remember that there are more than just the hx4700 to support,
so what might seem like a simple statement becomes a lot more complicated
to explain.

To me these links explain everything:

http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/RamdiskRescue#getfiles
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/RamdiskRescue#copyfiles
http://www.marcusbrutus.soho.on.net/Computers/main.php?g2_itemId=1740

While investigating your suggestions, I've removed some old info.

There are occasional problems with some of the images on the page, as I
have been performing some upgrade tests on my server.

But, hey, if you really tell me to go and read wiki once more, I will do
it. Just gave up for today.

ok :) .... reading with a fresh mind might help ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. I have deleted some old info on the wiki.

Marcus.

Hi madar,

Please read the instructions on the wiki carefully. Use the kernel from the ipaq-pxa270 directory for card booting.

Hello!

I successfully installed, and use familiar on SD card.
Installing onto CF is working but booting is fail: VFS: Cannot open
root
device "hda2" or unknown-block(0,0) ...
I think the kernel
http://www.users.on.net/~marcusbrutus/hx4700/zImage-2.6.15-hh2-ipaq-pxa270-20060923034420
can't see the CF card but I don't know why.

Is it a known problem, limitation or it isn't working only for me?

Thanks
madar
