yes, it can do this. i also record a small precison rock bass soundlibrary.
try this server list:
http://popez.org/~wolke/hydrogen/test_dr_list/drumkit_list.php

to edit note key use the combo box in note properties ruler and click at note.
here you will get two sections of rows.
the 7 upper rows edit the octave. the 12 lower rows locks like piano keys and
edit the note. every note which you have added with mouse click in editor, will
default set with key C. so the best is to use a c tuned sample.
in my bass library the sample name include the key. if you will play the bass
with a midi keyboard you can switch to 'play instrument like a piano'(combo box
at editor top) what mean that you only play the selected one instrument and
not the whole drumset over midi. so you can also record a melody. this works
also with your computer keys. but with computer keys no velocity and note off
will recorded. if you will only click a small and fast melody it's the best you
use "auto_stop_notes" ( lower chckbox in instrument properties) for this
instrument. so the playing note will automatically released if a new one will
started. this reduce disharmony :-). of course you can also edit the note
length for each note in pattern editor by hand e.g. to overlap some notes.

have fun :-))
