Hi all

after some problems with the first attempt to use the KXStudio main PPA, and
some mailing with Filipe (maintainer of the KXStudio PPA), Filipe has agreed
to create a PPA for hydrogen only :-)
there are 2 reasons for this :
1) when you install Hydrogen form the *main* KXStudio PPA there are a large
number of libs that automatically get updated (since this version of
hydrogen is compiled with all the latest available versions of those libs)
and this might not be what you want. With the new 'hydrogen-only' PPA it is
_only_ hydrogen that will be installed, nothing else. This is to make sure
that hydrogen users dont break their system while upgrading.
2) the hydrogen-only PPA only contains Hydrogen (0.9.5 and a 0.9.6
snapshot), so when users add this PPA to their software sources they can
only install these 2 packages. If they would add the KXStudio main PPA they
will have access to a lot more apps, but there is a chance that some of
these apps will not work well for them. this way we can avoid that hydrogen
users start to complain about issues that really have nothing to do with
hydrogen.

info will follow as soon as the PPA is up and i have checked it. Meanwhile
i have prepared a 'PPA info page' > check it out
here<http://hydrogen.popez.org/hcms/node/1868>(preliminary version !!)

the benefits of this PPA :
- Hydrogen 0.9.5 is available for ubuntu Natty, Maverick and Lucid (with
oneiric in the making)
- for 32 and 64 bit systems
- easy and clean install/uninstall
- frequent svn-snapshots (0.9.6) will be available in the same PPA (named
'hydrogen-svn') > this should make it easier for beta testers that dont want
to (or cant) compile from source, and hopefully give us more feedback

about this last item (the svn-snapshots) :
if you want to install the svn-version, the 'stable' 0.9.5 will be
uninstalled first
i have tried this and it seems to work fine. However, if i run the 0.9.6
snapshot there are a number of warnings about drumkit xml legacy format that
pop up.
no big deal, but i was just wondering if there are situations where the
0.9.6 could make changes to the drumkits (or any other config file, song
file ...) making it unreadable for the 0.9.5 ?

i dont want beta testers to try the 0.9.6 and when they roll back to 0.9.5
find that it doesnt work any more :-(

any ideas ?

grtz
Thijs
