If you use Toolkit V. 3.0, it is explained on page 65.

I've included the full message I'm replying to at the end of this post,
because I think there is some confusion about L3 . . . . . it may be that
just I am confused, in which case enlightenment from the list is always
welcome!
>From Leni's post, it seems that there is discussion about possibly two
different companies. We've had discussion before on this list about whether
there might be two companies with a similar name. One appears to be written
with a hyphen and one without. It seems one might be an IPO, but the other
just changed the company stock symbol to reflect the newly-formed company so
there may be sufficient history based on the old stock symbol that an SSG
could be done (haven't checked this out). I would hate to see someone purchase
the wrong stock because of confusion with the name so I'm including what I've
found in my internet meanderings and would appreciate confirmation from anyone
who has a better understanding than me.
In the original message Leni talks about L3 Communications going public and
says their ticker is LVLT and they are in partnership with Lockheed, Loral and
a group of investors. I suspect that the company in partnership with Lockheed,
Loral et al may be L-3 Communications Holdings, but that the stock symbol LVLT
belongs to L 3 Communications (Level 3 Communications) which was formed by
Peter Kiewet Sons Inc. (KIWT). I don't think these two are the same.
If you look up L-3 Communications on alert-IPO site
(http://www.ostman.com/alert-ipo/), you get the following basic info:
NAME: L-3 Communications Holdings
SYMBOL: LLL
EXCHANGE: NYSE
CEO: Frank C. Lanza
LOCATION: New York?
INDUSTRY: Instruments
DESCRIPTION: Merchant supplier of sophisticated secure communication systems
and specialized communication products including secure, high data rate
communication systems, microwave components, avionics and ocean systems, and
telemetry, instrumentation and space products.
At www.sec.gov, some of this info seems confirmed when they say "Holdings and
L-3 Communications were formed in April 1997 by Mr. Frank C. Lanza, the former
President and Chief Operating Officer of Loral Corporation."
However, a search on the symbol LLL (symbol given on the Alert-IPO site) at
various sites (including NYSE) brings up no results (except on the NASDAQ site
which returns Campbell Soup as the company for the LLL symbol - figure that
one out!)
A search on the ticker LVLT gives us the information for L3 Communications and
this info is taken from their site (http://www.l3.com/)
NAME: L 3 Communications
SYMBOL: LVLT
EXCHANGE: NASDAQ
CEO: James Q Crowe
LOCATION: Colorado
INDUSTRY: (not listed, but suspect it's Communications Svcs.)
DESCRIPTION: a telecommunications and information services company that has
announced its plans to build and operate advanced fiber networks across the
United States using Internet technology
On the L 3 site they mention that prior to April 1, 1998 the stock symbol was
KIWT (Peter Kiewit SonsÂ’, Inc.) and beginning beginning April 1, 1998, it
became LVLT (Level 3 Communications, Inc.)
The article on the Red Herring site talks about L-3, but doesn't mention a
ticker symbol.
To help resolve the confusion, I've sent an email to the L3 investor relations
department and will let the list know the results.

This is NOT L3 Communications, which has not gone public yet and is a
different industry.

Peggy-
You are correct, they are two different companies. L3 is expected to go
public in mid-April and is not connected with Peter Kiewit SonsÂ’, Inc.
