Wrong number: Itaniums run at 733MHz

Intel disappoints some industry observers by announcing the Itanium will be
introduced initially at 733MHz, not 800MHz.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Nine Itanium-based computer makers are eager to chat up
their prototype workstations and servers on display here at this week's
Intel Developer Forum, but there's one question they'd prefer not to answer.
"We can't tell you at what speed the chip is running at. Intel told us not
to talk about that," said one vendor representative, who asked not to be
identified.

Indeed, Intel Corp. disappointed some industry observers Tuesday when it
announced that the Itanium will be introduced initially at 733MHz, not at
the 800MHz clock speed it had earlier promised.

"We have announced the product at 733MHz to 800MHz, and we're currently
running them at anywhere from 500MHz to 733MHz," said Mike Fister, vice
president and general manager of Intel's Enterprise Platform Group. "The
800MHz is a laboratory experiment right now, but we're not trying to come
into production with that product right out of the chute."

While Intel officials strongly contend that discussions about the slight
clock speed deficiency means little when compared to the revolutionary
performance-enhancing features of the Itanium, the inability to deliver the
chip at the promised 800MHz marks another in a long line of disappointing
announcements involving the product's development.

Under development since 1994, the Itanium has been plagued by numerous
setbacks that have forced Intel to push back its arrival more than two
years.

Previously known by the code name Merced, the chip features a promising new
architecture known as EPIC, for Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing,
that Intel claims will deliver dramatically better performance than current
64-bit solutions.
