Anti-virus experts reported Friday discovering a new Internet worm called Navidad@m, which enters a person's computer as an e-mail attachment disguised as a Christmas greeting. When the victim clicks on the "Navidad.exe" file, the virus is saved in the Windows system directory and a blue eye icon appears in the system tray next to the clock in the lower right corner of the monitor. Every time the victim receives an e-mail, the virus automatically responds with the infected attachment. The virus, which spreads through Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, does not delete, overwrite, or hide files, so is not as damaging as other types of infections. "It is an annoyance and it also has the possibility to freeze up Windows, which is also a huge annoyance," April Goostree, virus research manager for McAfee.com Corp., Sunnyvale, Calif., said. Because Navidad@m responds to every incoming e-mail, it could crash a large corporation's e-mail server. "It's certainly a possibility if you get a large corporation with this worm infecting their system," Goostree said, adding that such a crash is unlikely. The virus originated in South America, and high levels of infections have also been reported in Latin America and the United Kingdom, Goostree said. Infections in the United States have been minimal. Other attributes of the virus include several messages in Spanish. When a cursor is placed over the eye icon, the text "we are watching it" is displayed. When the icon is clicked, a button appears that reads, "Never press this button." Pressing the button displays a message box entitled "Feliz Navidad" that reads, "Merry Christmas.
