I assume you use OpenSolaris0805, right?
I can not reproduce the issue(file Desktop is created instead of dir 
Desktop) in the latest OpenSolaris(based on sxce_99).
Regarding the directory renaming -- the design is that if you have some 
files in those directories, such as Desktop, it won't be moved. In fact 
it is not a renaming, it is "removing and then creating". Since changing 
the existing files may cause other problems, when you login, if you 
choose to "rename" those directories, the system will just "remove" 
those directories(if empty, otherwise keep unchanged.) and "create" 
those directories in localized names.
But there is still a problem -- when you change to Chinese names, GNOME 
may still use the previous name "Desktop" for some links. We are aware 
of the problem and the responsible engineer is working on the solution. 
For now as a work around, you need to logout and login again. Then 
everything works fine.
And Chinese characters can also be displayed in en_US.UTF-8. If you can 
not see it, please check your locale and the terminal's character set 
setting.
