Getting ready for the new school year involves more than a shopping trip to
Target. It's also a good time to check up on your child's emotional and
physical well-being. Keep these ideas in mind as you and your child prepare for
the upcoming year.

1. Ask you child how they are feeling about the upcoming year. You may be
surprised to hear that they have concerns about the required work, the new
schedules, perhaps a new building or even a new school altogether. Some of
these concerns can be easily put to rest by a visit to the school or a talk
with an older sibling or neighbor who has already "been there and done that."

2. Call your child's primary physician and schedule his or her annual annual
well-child exam. The exam will determine your child's appropriate weight and
height for their age, and will check on vital signs and developmental
milestones. Your doctor may even provide some counseling on diet, exercise or
child safety if they think it necessary.

3. Check on the need for a sports exam. All schools require a physician-signed
sports exam before allowing children to participate in school sports. Call your
child's school to ask for the necessary form and take it with you to the exam.
You may be able to combine the annual well-child exam with the sports physical.
The sports exam is needed only every two years, so if your child had one last
year, you can skip it this year.

4. Ask about your child's immunization schedule. If they are under eleven years
of age, they are probably up to date. But boosters are required for certain
diseases after age 11, and you may want to consider some of the optional
immunizations for chicken pox and meningitis. If you have daughters over the
age of twelve, you may want to consider the Guardisil immunization against
certain types of cervical cancer.

5. Talk with the school nurse. If your child has certain chronic conditions
such as asthma or diabetes, or takes medication during the school day, a visit
with the school nurse may help ward off an emergency phone call once school
begins.

6. Make dental appointments before school starts. After Labor Day, it will be
tough to get the coveted after-school time slots and starting the school year
with a bright shining smile will help your child's confidence.

By taking care of your child's emotional and physical well-being before school
starts, you can both approach the new year with excitement and a sense of
preparedness. And don't worry, there will still be plenty of time to shop for
new jeans and the perfect backpack!
