From: "Allo, Paulus T" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 1:41 PM Subject: [iagi-net-l] IAGI Luncheon Talk IKATAN AHLI GEOLOGI INDONESIA (IAGI) DIVISI PROFESSIONAL LUNCHEON TALK DATE: Wednesday, 29 January 2003 TIME : 12.00 - 14.00 WIB VENUE: "SULAIMAN ROOM" MAHARAJA HOTEL SUBJECT : "Bitter Things To Do After Sweet Moment: A case study of the Kelian Equatorial Mining" SPEAKER : SENO AJI (Superintendent Geology and Geotechnical, PT. Kelian Equatorial Mining) ABSTRACT Mine closure is actually an activity commonly done by a mining company whose reserves have been exhausted. A reserve is said to be exhausted if it can no longer be mine economically or if a new reserve cannot be found. Interestingly, no government regulation regulates this matter. If we look into it more deeply, mine closure is very complex both technically and socially. Kelian is one of Rio Tinto's model mine closure projects in Indonesia and is committed to closing its mine in accordance with the existing environmental standards and joint agreements with the government. In order to help the government get ideas for the development of a regulation, Kelian has formed a group comprising the government, NGOs, customary institutions, educational institutions and Rio Tinto it self. Technically, the majority of mineral existing in a gold mine is FeS2, which produces acid rock drainage if oxidized and dissolved in water. It is acid rock drainage and the characteristics of rocks that will be handled so that it is not decomposed and becomes neutral when entering the river. For this purpose, Kelian covers waste material by means of wet covering and dry covering techniques. In addition, wetlands are also constructed on the riverbank area as additional control, which is managed naturally and passively.
