"The nature of the sedimentary fills of a rift basin depends on its climatic zone, uplift pattern of the rift shoulders or arches acting as sediment sources or barriers, subsidence rate of central rift valleys determining alluvial base levels and lake water depths, and tectonic evolution of linked extensional fault systems. The broad features of the initial deposits of rifts are that they are predominantly non-marine, comprising arkosic, commonly volcaniclastic fluviatile deposits, lacustrine (fresh-water or evaporitic) and aeolian deposits. These sediment types typify syn-rift sequences and can be very extensive. Fault-controlled subsidence commonly outpaces sedimentation at later stages of rift development encouraging marine incursions. Shallow marine sediments may be overlain by deeper marine sediments as the rift evolves towards a site of sea floor spreading."
