Dear all, Department of Geology Institut Teknologi Bandung is conducting five days course in structural geology.
APPLICATION OF MODERN STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY IN PETROLEUM EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT: A BASIC APPROACH is a back to basic course where each participant will be taught a complete basic yet up to date concept on structural geology. The course will range from Introduction to Structural Geology, where course participants will be refreshed with the basic concept, up to Case Study, where course participants will be taught how to apply the correct basic structural concept into daily problems. Ir. Benyamin Sapiie Ph.D, lecturer at Department of Geology ITB and Geological Consultant, will be presenting the course. Throughout his 19 years career as geologist, Benyamin Sapiie has given consultation services to a number of E&P Companies in Indonesia, America, Canada and Japan. Benyamin Sapiie obtained his bachelor degree from Dept. of Geology ITB (1987) and Ph.D from Geological Sciences from University of Texas at Austin, USA (1998) The course will be held in MALYA Bandung from June 12 to June 16, 2006. Please find course details on the information attached to this e-mail. If you need more information about course agenda, instructor and, arrangement, please feel free to contact us. Kind regards and hope to see you all at the course... Departemen Geology FIKTM ITB Jl. Course Instructor : Ir. Benyamin Sapiie, Ph.D. Lecturer at Dept. Geology ITB & Geological Consultant Venue : Malya Bandung, June 12-16, 2006 Information : www.gc.itb.ac.id, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cost : USD 1,975 (Including 6 nights accommodation in Malya Bandung and 17% VAT) COURSE OVERVIEW At the peak of global exploration abuzz, Indonesia remains as an attractive exploration target. Its complexity of tectonic setting makes Indonesia both attractive and challenging for E&P players. In Indonesian basins, structures, in the form of fractures, faulting, fault systems and folds are the most important geologic features in petroleum exploration and production. They can act as traps, pathways or pressure barrier that can cause numerous problems to the operation and production. Understanding structural geology is a rule of thumb in determining petroleum system of an area. Yet, the basic knowledge of their origin, mechanisms and distributions were limited or even in a lot of time are wrong. This course aims to up-date both explorationists and development geologist on the latest concept of modern structural geology. The main emphasis will be placed upon the basic understanding of the deformation mechanism and sedimentary basin development. Application of the modern structural geology concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and development will be presented and discuss in great detail. The course will combine multidisciplinary studies involving descriptive structural geology, analogue modeling, stratigraphy and numerical modeling as a way of understanding various tectonics processes. Numerous examples from outcrops and subsurface data will be presented as a natural analogue and real world case study. A series of practical exercises and problems will do and discuss during the course. A special sandbox presentation will be complemented to this course to help course participants understand the structural mechanism and behavior. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Explorationists, exploration and development geologists, geophysicists, engineers, petroleum engineers, geosciences managers, Oil & Gas Regulator. Course Schedule Day 1 THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT OF MODERN STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY * Introduction to Structural Geology * The concepts of stress and strain * Application continuum mechanics theory in Geology * Rheology and Rock Deformation - Brittle - Ductile * Nomenclatures stress vs. strain * Mohr Diagram as tool for understanding rock deformation - Fractures, Faults, Joints * Summary of The concepts of Modern Structural Geology - Link Tectonics - Progressive Deformation - Scale Independence in Brittle Deformation - Structural Inheritance Day 2 STRUCTURAL STYLES AND THEIR ORIGIN (PART I) * Nomenclature of Faults and Folds * Fault Related Folds * Compressional Structures - Style and Classification - Thin-skinned vs. Thick-skinned * Extensional Structures - Style and classification * Rift Basin and their importance - Types - Rift Basin Stratigraphy * Mechanism of Rift Basin Day 3 STRUCTURAL STYLES AND THEIR ORIGIN (PART II) * Inversion Structures * Types and Classifications * Mechanism of Inversion * Strike-Slip DeFormation * Types and Classifications * Mechanism of Strike-slip Faulting Day 4 FRACTURES AND JOINTS * Definitions, Classifications and Nomenclatures * Method of Study * Analysis of Geomechanics (In-Situ Stress Measurement) * Methods of Fractures Modeling * Application Modern Structural Geology in Hydrocarbon Exploration - Dynamic and Kinematic Methods - Balancing Cross-Section * Application Modern Structural Geology in Development Fields - Fault-seal Analysis and Reservoir Geomechanis Day 5 MODELS, EXERCISE & CASE STUDY * Analogue Sandbox Modeling Laboratory * Case Study, Summary and Discussion THE INSTRUCTOR Ir. Benyamin Sapiie Ph.D has professionally involved in structural geology for 19 years. He obtained bachelor degree in geology from department of Geology Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in 1987, followed by Ph.D in Geological Sciences from University of Texas at Austin, USA, in 1998. Aside of his lecturing job (structural geology and tectonics) in ITB, he also works as consultant for companies dealing with structural geology problems. He has given professional consultation for BP, Chevron, BOB-CPP, CNOOC, ConocoPhillips, Kondur Petroleum, KUFPEC, MEDCO E&P, Pertamina, Anadarko (in Canada and Houston), Japex (Tokyo) and Freeport McMoran. He also gave service to the Directorate General Oil & Gas in 25 basins evaluation study prior to block bidding program in 2003 and 2004. Benyamin Sapiie pays a serious attention to the development of structural geology in Indonesia. He is doing a continuous research in structural geology in ITB; Sandbox Modelling, Fracture Modelling in a field base study in Central and South Sumatra basins and, Paleogene Tectonics of East Java and Banyumas Basin. He also has produced a number of publications. His latest publication, $B!H(JCollision Delamination in New Guinea: The Geotectonics of Subducting Slab Breakoff$B!I(J, was specially published by prestigious Geological Society of America in 2005. Benyamin Sapiie is member of several professional organizations; IAGI, FOSI, IPA, AAPG, GSA. He is also visiting lecture for University of Texas at Austin, Universitas Gadjah Mada Jogjakarta, Universitas Hassanudin Makassar and, Universitas Trisakti Jakarta.
