ABC News Online [This is the print version of story http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200701/s1823536.htm] Last Update: Tuesday, January 9, 2007. 10:08am (AEDT) Mining triggered Newcastle quake, says US academic A United States academic claims the 1989 earthquake which devastated Newcastle was triggered by coal mining in the region. Dr Christian Klose from the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory says the mines weakened and reactivated a major fault line below Newcastle, which caused the quake. The tremor killed 13 people and caused billions of dollars worth of damage. It was Australia's first recorded fatal earthquake and Dr Klose says it was probably set off by two centuries of coal mining. "Coal mining started 200 years ago in Newcastle, so if you apply this data to the model, you see how the stress changed," he said. "Humans are one part to contribute to the stress change in the crust." Dr Klose has only been to Newcastle once, last year, but his theory is based on analysing years of mining data. He used the information to assess the relative strength of the earth in the Newcastle area. "The data have shown that the dramatic change in the stresses in the crust occurred after the Second World War and this is because production increased," he said. "Before that time, production was not that large and did not change the stress in the crust that much." While Dr Klose thinks coal mining triggered the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, he accepts mining is integral to the city's economy. He says the earthquake raises questions about the way the mining industry operates.
