  *Field Trip Overview *
Hydrocarbon exploration commonly utilizes subsurface data which are threated
as surface outcrops and interprete them as a genetic model. Understanding on
the depositional model becomes important to enhance the interpretation. That
knowledge can be achieved by observing the on-going sedimentation system or
examining the outcrops of ancient depositional system.
Hydrocarbon discoveries in the deformed turbidite sequences within the
Kalimantan Deep Water Block have commenced further exploration on the
similar deposits elsewhere. Turbidite deposits are a thick series of fine to
coarse grained sediments deposited by density currents on an unstable
basinal slope.
It has long been assumed that turbidite contains abundant fine grained
particles that act as pore plug and thus decreasing the porosity, where in
turn made the turbidite sequences unlikely to be a hydrocarbon reservoir.
However, turbidite depositional processes are polygenetics, where different
depositional processes were working together in different part at the same
time. It often produces distinctive characteristics in sandstone and makes
their reservoir quality varied, including some clean sand.
The Pre-convention IAGI 2007 Field Trip will visit two physiographic zones
in Central Java which have extensive turbidite deposits, the Southern
Mountains and the Kendeng Zone, respectively. Participants are invited to
examine various turbidite sequences as well as their characteristics and
discuss their possibility in a petroleum system. In the Kendeng Zone,
participants have opportunities to observe strong deformational processes
had produced various structural traps.
Department of Geological Engineering UGM has conducted numerous geological
field studies on both zones, particularly on their tectonostratigraphy. This
field trip is considered important as a means of knowledge and experiences
exchanges with industrial colleagues is needed to enhance the researches and
their application to academic purposes.
