Membandingkan keekonomian ini akan rancu kalau kita membandingkan conventional vs unconventional. Conventional oil mungkin ongkos produksinya relatif lebih rendah, tetapi pay outnya lebih lama dibandingkan unconventional oil. Shale Oil/Gas dapat memberikan return lebih cepat namun kapitalnya lebih besar untuk sejumlah (volume) produksi yang sama. Tentunya nilai keekonomian akan menjadi non-comparable kalau yang satu dengan pembiayaan hutang yang bunganya berbeda. Kalau iseng-iseng diperhatikan "perang harga" ini dibantu juga dengan pendanaan. Darimana modalnya ? Saya bukan ekonom, tetapi saya kira fenomena keekonomiannya tidak akan sama diantara keduanya. Seringkali ada yang mengatakan bahwa usaha shale oil/gas ini bukan tipical "exploration and production" tetapi seperti "fabrication". Kayaknya usaha shale oil/gas ini sangat cocok dalam pemikiran dan pola bisnis kapitalis yg padat modal, cepat kembali, dan masif.
