The statistics section has a high international ranking in research. It delivers lectures in applied and theoretical statistics and probability to a wide range of students. It also supplies statistical consulting services to industry, universities and the general community through the UWA Statistical Consulting Group. At least one appointment will be in the area of financial mathematics and statistics. This appointee is expected to take the lead in running and developing our Master of Financial Mathematics in partnership with the UWA Business School. At least two appointments will be in applied statistics, where we have a growing commitment to research activity, a large role in undergraduate statistical education for science students and an active statistical consulting group. We also welcome applications in any area of statistics and probability. All appointees are expected to be active in research, measured broadly by academic publications, grant-funded research projects and/or consulting activities. Supervision of probability or statistics postgraduates and joint supervision of post-graduates from across the University is expected. Collaboration with other research organisations within Australia and overseas is valued. Applicants for an Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer position must have a PhD in Statistics (applied or theoretical) or equivalent qualification in a related discipline. For appointment as Lecturer applicants must have a PhD or expected completion of this qualification. Applicants for a position in applied statistics must have or be eligible for accreditation in AStat, GStat of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc., or CStat of the Royal Statistical Society. POSITION DESCRIPTIONS The School has the opportunity to rebuild its statistics section with these appointments. As such there is some degree of flexibility as to the mix of statistical expertise required. We must have appointments in applied statistics and financial mathematics to cover teaching, but people with wide statistical interests are welcome to apply. All positions are tenurable on satisfactory completion of a probationary three years in line with normal university conditions of employment. PRE-REQUISITES 1.For Lecturer level B, a PhD, or working towards completion of PhD in Statistics (applied or theoretical), or equivalent academic qualification in a related discipline 2.Experience in university teaching of Statistics commensurate with level of appointment 3.Track record of research in Statistics or in the applications of Statistics commensurate with level of appointment 4.Demonstrated high quality of oral and written communication in English 5.Statistical accreditation (Gstat, AStat, CStat) or eligibility for accreditation for a position in applied statistics 6.Willingness to participate in statistical consulting activities if in applied statistics, or collaborate with the School of Business if interested in financial mathematics SELECTION CRITERIA 1.Evidence of outstanding research track record or potential, commensurate with level of appointment 2.Evidence of teaching expertise 3.Experience in statistical consulting, or in the practical application of statistical methods for positions in applied statistics 4.Demonstrated high quality of interpersonal skills 5.Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary environment DUTY STATEMENT 1.Undertake teaching duties as negotiated with colleagues and the Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics 2.Carry out a program of research and or consulting commensurate with level of appointment. 3.Some intra and extra university collaborations would be expected, depending on the interests of the appointee. The School has contacts in medicine, biological sciences, engineering and business within the university and works with CSIRO and other universities in Perth.
