Crap.  I can't stand it when vendors don't implement such methods. 
Seriously!  The result set has to be in *SOME* mode!  So why not just
always return that mode?

Sylvain, I envy you, as you have a good reason to call up IBM and yell
in their ear...something I would love to do for you (no offense to any
IBMers on the list).  :-)
