I made it use the kernel module after adding
force_load=1
to the /etc/modprobe.d/tpfand.conf file.
So now the full content of the file is:
options thinkpad_acpi force_load=1 fan_control=1 experimental=1
It would be helpful, if someone could explain to me why I need to force the
loading of the module on a Thinkpad X61s.

It doesn't look BIOS related though. Try to rebuild the module against
the correct kernel maybe?
