ACP, One of the Oldest Open Source Apps

from above:

"The Airline Control Program (ACP), introduced by IBM around 1967,
predated the term 'open source' by decades.

above doesn't mention the lack of SMP support during 3081 period ...
when (initially) all machines were going to be multiprocessor:

some recent posts mentioning 23jun69 unbundling announcement (starting
to charge for application software, SE services, other stuff
... however, the case was made to still provide kernel software for
free):

distraction of future system effort and allowing 370 product pipeline is
associated with letting clone processor getting foothold in the market
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/submain.html#futuresys

which possibly contributed to decision to start to charge for kernel
software. after future system was killed & in the mad rush to get stuff
back into the 370 product pipeline ... some of the software I had been
doing all during the future system period was selected for release. One
of the pieces, dynamic adaptive resource management got selected to be
guinea pig for kernel software charging ... being packaged as separate
kernel component ... some past posts
http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/subtopic.html#fairshare

over the next several years ... more and more kernel components switch
to be charge for ... until all kernel was priced ... eliminating have
component packaging issues of charged & not charged.
