Did you perhaps mean "... did _not_ think about ..."? I don't know the time lines; perhaps Java couldn't have been a consideration. But there's a more fundamental concern: For the easier understanding by the reader of the code, the defined type of a field should agree notionally with its intended use, independent of other languages available in the environment.
