"The old system wouldn't have been able to handle that change" is utter
bull$h1t.  More believable (and probably more correct) might have been
something like "The cost in both time and money to implement that change
in the old system would have been prohibitive."

Some lessons learned by one group seem to be completely lost on another.

The cost to do a line for line conversion from one system to another is
quite high.

The cost to do a function for function conversion from one system to
another is much more manageable.

Then there is the developing a system from scratch on new architecture
(including BCP and testing, throughput, etc.)...

There's bleeding edge and then there is bleeding edge.
