I can only relate my experinces I set
The ECB to SP 241 key 8
And it blew up withe above comp code
When I set SP241 to a ptr to sp 0 key 8 everything worked

Like a couple of people have posted, this isn't true. One reason
the poster may feel like this is true is if the ECB resides in
storage obtained by a different task which has terminated (and
storage obtained by that other task was freed). Many system ABEND
codes start off as S0C4s.
