Since the advent of SMS in MVS/ESA V3, many JES3 installations (including ours) no longer have DASD defined to JES3. If DASD is SMS-managed, you can get the same benefit of pre-execution setup you got in the pre-SMS days with all DASD defined to JES3. SMS was designed from the beginning to provide special interfaces to JES3 explicitly for this purpose.

For shops that still use JES3 DASD device-level awareness, some OS/390 release (V2R8?) added a syntax for the DEVICE statement so that very large ranges of device addresses (1-32K) could be defined for all systems in the JESplex with a single statement. A hot start with refresh is used to pick up changes to DEVICE statements.
