Subject: Re: Replace VTS with a tape less appliance
Buy lots of excess capacity. As these tapeless systems fill up, they
will
tend to reclaim the disk space used for each tape. So if you have a
tape
get scratched early, you may not be able to recover it, even if it
hasn't
been physically overwritten. A big drawback to these new systems. Also
make sure that your scratch list is IRONCLAD. These systems will take
any
old scratch list and nuke the tapes. In our case, an old scratch list
got
passed to the box, it nuked the tapes, and the space on the box was so
tight
that is reclaimed the space for those tapes, even though they had not
been
written to. The vendor's tech support kept saying, "It works just like
real
tape". Um, no. With real tape, I could still recover the data, thank
you.

Hi Tom,
Too true on your first point. The VTS we're working with just takes
a VOLSER list from CA-1.
On your second point, we're actively working with our vendor to
provide a 7-day (configurable?) no-scratch period AFTER the VTS gets
these VOLSERS from CA-1. More to come on that.

Bob Lester
