Hi,

The CONSOLE address had been using a noticeable amount of CPU higher
than I would like. CONSOLE was at times using 40 to 50 MIPS an hour on
a 2084.

Two White Papers on Console Performance proved quite useful in
understanding part of what drove this.

Console Performance Hints and Tips for a Parallel Sysplex Environment
Part I & II by David Yackel (IBM Poughkeepsie)

which were downloaded from
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/library/literature/referen
ce.html

Two APARs OA08482 & OA09229 also had a lot of information.

We are currently at R4 still working on migrating to R6. We expect some
further relief from OA09229 once z/OS R6 is fully implemented on all
systems in the Sysplex but we got considerable immediate relief by a
very small change.

OA08482/UA14743 were already APPLIED on all R4 LPARs so we added
.FORNSSI *NONE to MPFLSTXX and set this active dynamically. We automate
messages on the local system where they are issued so we took the
recommended action and suppressed broadcast to foreign subsystems and I
have not found any problems as a result.

This provided over an 80% reduction from the previous levels of CONSOLE
CPU use during our peak WLC charging hours! If you are in a Sysplex you
should spend a few minutes to look at this. I am still investigating a
couple remaining spikes which seem be caused when UNIX processes on
other systems do FTP to z/OS and create hordes of BPXF024I messages i.e.

BPXF024I (EDWPFTP) Oct 17 06:27:12 ftps 16777906 : SR3313 sendx_data:
sent 167988 bytes. rc = 167988.

Prior to making the change I put CONSOLE in it's own report class and so
it was easy to chart this before and after to document the results.

Before changing your systems it is your responsibility to verify it
won't be a problem for you. Caveat Emptor! Having said that I still
think IBM would have done the majority of users a favor to ship the new
default as .FORNSSI *NONE and provided appropriate HOLD(ACTION) and
updated publications.

        Best Regards,
