Thanks.  I hadn't known about that.  But:

o I tried it with a TSO ALLOCATE... command (as above), and I got:

      RESPONSE=smfn      IEE305I TSO      COMMAND INVALID

  ???

o And it pops up a window, obscuring most of the output display
  from which I might want to copy/paste or merely retype text.
  (Scrolling through the command recall buffer could have been
  done with PF7/PF8 when the cursor is in the extended command
  area.)

o And the area is formatted as multiple fields rather than a
  single field, making insertion of characters a pain.

o And, typical of IBM's penchant for implementing useful facilities
  in the wrong layer, this seems peculiar to SDSF.  More usefully,
  it should apply to all ISPF panels having command lines.

They could have done better on all those points.
