But when it was opened using Ultra-Edit, the lines were offset. So I went back to fixed length. The other change I did was to move a field from the end of the record to the start, and I compressed the anecdotal data, creating spaces at the end. When I FTPd the fixed length file, I was delighted to discover that the file on the Unix box was variable length, without trailing spaces.
