One thing we do to "protect" our system from runaway distributed DB2 queries is to make sure the WLM service class for possibly-ill-behaved queries has two periods with the final period set to Discretionary. That way, we have a chance of logging on and dealing with an ill-behaved thread without too many ill effects to the rest of the system.
