I consider lock structures like GRS and JES2 checkpoint in the same category as data sharing structures (since they enable very active sharing of resources), but I should have specifically mentioned it. As I was composing my post I was going to mention GRS in particular along with some other specifics from my experiences of structures that were "ok" and "not ok", but ended up deleting that part and replacing it with "YMMV" since it really does depend on so many factors.
