In 1980, my final year at UOW, I wrote a paper stating exactly the same thing. I got a good mark, and ended up with a double major (CS & Stats). But, my point wasn't so much on the symbols, rather the fact that = was not a good choice for assignment. == is a good choice for comparison. := is ALGOL - I'm a SuperHero with neither powers, nor motivation!
