Problem Statement: We are attempting to estimate the number of compressed ML1 and ML2 data sets that will fit on EAV volumes. For ML1 data sets, field UMDSIZE from IDCAMS DCOLLECT layout appears to be reporting with reasonable numbers. For ML2 the number does not seem close at all. Test Case. 2 data sets were allocated at 75 tracks each. One version of the data set was migrated to ML1 The other to ML2. Performing an HLIST on the ML1 version, I show trks=75, 2k BLKS=346 Field UMDSIZE shows 692 KB Rough calculations trks = 692 * 1024 / 56664 gives alittle over 11 tracks which matches fairly close to what the HSM.HMIG dsn is allocated at on disk.
For the ML2 version, I show trks=75, #16k Blocks = 256 from an HLIST Field UMDSIZE from DCOLLECT shows 4096 kb Rough calculations...trks = 256 * (16 *1024) / 56664 gives 74 + tracks The value for UMDSIZE for ML2 is a mystery to me. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas what the value for UMDSIZE in DCOLLECT means for ML2 data?
