I had my gmail account hijacked a year ago. They did it by getting access to my 
session cookies. What I have learned is that you should ALWAYS log-out, use pop 
or imap if possible and try and avoid public hotspots and public computers. 
Also do not select the "Remember Me" option.

If you are using Gmail you can see who had access to you gmail account by going 
to the bottom of the gmail page and click on "Details". 
There is a list of the last few IP addresses that accessed the account and it 
will show  you if the account is currently being accessed at a different 
location.
