Years ago there was a Program Logic Manual (PLM) for SVS OPEN/CLOSE/EOV. If you can find one of those it will give you a good idea of how it works today. Details may change, but I don't think the basic flow has. In the last set of microfiche they provided, the IBM code had not changed much from MVT. There were still comments in it about changes made for MVT.
Bottom line - IBM wants all that to be a 'black box' to the outside world and for you not to mess with. Christopher Y.
