Thanks for the hint.  In fact, I find the problem occurs with
tn3270 X 3.1.6; not with x3270.  I've updated the ETR asking that
action be deferred until I can get a protocol trace.

You might try back-tabbing before entering the response. It does sound like an emulator problem.
