When I went in 1969, we used a 1401 with 4 tape drives. We were taught COBOL but could not compile: the COBOL compiler for the 1401 needed either disk or at least 6 tape drives.
We also learned to "program" PCM and two Univac SAAL computers that were in use by the Army at the time. They had a CDC 3300 as the main record keeper with somebody's MassStor and several ancillary processors. I didn't notice the unit record equipment just the sound of a drum bouncing around in the bottom of the cage. The programming course was taught on DOS under VM(Lt. Farmer participated in SHARE).
