DB2 absolutely requires DFSORT for some of its internal functions.
Syncsort is documented to not work with DB2. DB2 comes with a
"subset"
license for this purpose. I.e. you don't have a general DFSORT
license.
See the following Informational APAR for more information on this:

Is there a description somewhere of why this special, internal-only
interface was added? Why should DB2 care what sort product a site uses,
to
the point of mandating installation and use of an IBM product even if an
installation has chosen another?
This seems to me to be the same kind of bundling that got Microsoft in
such
hot water...
Why all the angst ???.
How is this any different to LDAP requirements for RACF ???.
IMHO it is fair.
You can choose cometition offering.
HSM requires DSS product, because they needed it. HSM does not require
RMM for example. 3494 does not require RMM.
DB2 requires some sort. They used DFSORT, because the code is always
included, but they left to customers the choice of sort product. What's
wrong with that ? Should DB2 rely on "any sort product" ? I don't think
so, consider customer that has no sort. Should DB2 authors create their
own sort code ?
