Long ago - well, OK, about 6 or 8 months ago -- I had started working on some 
scripts using s3270 to use with Hobbit and/or Nagios for performance alerting.  
Most likely, s3270 (perhaps combined with Expect) should do what George needs.

The x3270 suite has a program called s3270 with is used for scripting 
interaction with a 3270 session.
