This maybe necessary for media like tape, but does it really apply to disk.
The data is periodically being checked for errors all the time, and if a
chunk actually fails it can be replaced and rebuilt. SATA is a paradigm
shift.

Perhaps another way to say this is the data must still exist after two
concurrent media failures. In HDS we call that RAID-6 (so do STK).

International is not a new thing, and the bandwidth to do is becoming more
accessible every day. I know of two Banks that run international Remote Copy
- one from Singapore to Hong Kong, and one HK to Singapore.
