I think many sysprogs are also application programmers, or started out in that position. I spent 9 months as a code warrior before switching to systems. I've coded quite a few assembler, cobol and cics apps in my position as a sysprog. Also, I sometimes debug applications when a programmer needs such assistance, ie stg violations. App programmers here don't have the knowledge to read dumps and xpediter doesn't always catch them.
