there is also the folklore of the contractor hired to do the original tcp/ip implementation in vtam. the initial try had tcp benchmark w/thruput much higher than lu6.2. it was explained to him that everybody KNEW that a CORRECT tcp/ip implementation would have thruput much lower than lu6.2 ... and they were only willing to accept a CORRECT protocol implementation. the contract was handled by a group that was sometimes called cpd-west located in palo alto sq (corner of el camino and page mill).
