I may be wrong but I thought that DSORG
was not optional on the DCB macro.

I certainly did assume that. Have I misunderstood the
following:

Title: z/OS V1R5.0 DFSMS: Using Data Sets
    Document Number: SC26-7410-03

# 3.2.2.1 "z/OS V1R5.0 DFSMS: Using Data Sets"

  3.2.2.1 Filling in the DCB

    4. From the JFCB, OPEN fills in any field not completed in the DCB or
DCBE. This completes what is called the forward merge.

??? (I know, it's pretty complicated.)
