What's being discussed here is not some sort of daily or hourly mass reorg. Rather, the discussion centers around real-time extent consolidation, performed by the access method itself, when a new, contiguous extent is added. FDR does not do that!

I have seen data centers run a defrag (extent consolidation) on all their production packs daily. While this is no means a global thing it is done at *SOME* data centers. While it would be nice if it were done auto-magically by DFP realistically with the growth of some data centers (more like an explosion) its getting harder and harder to do it daily that is why it would be better to have DFP do it so it wouldn't have to be done as a separate task.
