Have you looked into the IBM Scholars program? They are working with
Universities to generate interest in the mainframe. There does seem to
be a good deal of interest from the schools and from the students, they
just need to know that we are here and aren't going away. Once students
have the opportuinity to play on a mainframe they like it.
There are several Colleges and Universities that are offering mainframe
courses.

We are aware of those programs, and yes, the people who go through
them do seem to respond with enthusiasm. A local university recently
held a mainframe programming contest, and the students' reactions
were impressively positive. That in itself is encouraging. But I
have yet to see a single resume from anyone like that cross my
desk. It appears, at least for now, that the number of people being
exposed in this way is microscopically small (I'm trying for an
analogy that means "LESS than a drop in the bucket", but I can't
think of one). So for now, it doesn't seem 's not enough to have any impact.
That said, programs like these certainly are a first step in the
right direction. Let's pray they are just the leading edge of a
trend that will continue to develop.
