Thank you to Jay, Ken and John who have responded.  John, I was
enquiring regarding the logical virtual 
scratch volumes that I was hoping to reduce so that I could free some
stacked volumes. 
Is what you have indicated below is what I was enquiring? If it is, I
will get on with it straight
away!

Use your tape management system to find some VTS volumes which are in
scratch status. You'll need to determine how many you need to "free up".
Once you have a list of the volsers, enter the z/OS command:

LI EJECT,xxxxxx

Where "xxxxxx" is replaced by the volser you want to "eject". In a VTS,
this removes the volume from the VTS's inventory and frees the space
that it is taking on the backstore (stack) volume.
