Thankfully, I'm no psychologist. But, like any educated person, I'm well aware that perception and reality often have wholly insufficient overlap -- often because of how things are portrayed by the media.
For example, most "ordinary" people I run into are surprised to find out that mainframe computers are still being used in the 21st century. Before I set them straight, they are completely ignorant of the fact that Western Civilization _runs_ on mainframe computers! How could their perceptions be so wrong???
Then there are philosophy students that will argue, "Perception *is* Reality". I prefer to stick to bits and bytes myself...
