First of all it wasnt Steve who quoted the number it was me and I did so
based on my own experiences. I was talking about mainframe shops running
z/OS - I did not include universities.

The number of actual mainframe shops in China has dropped significantly
since 2001 as the banks consolidated their VSE shops into larger OS/390 and
z/OS environments. Other than the banks there is no great use of z OS in
China. That may change over the next few years if IBM has there way.

The number 10 was an approximation but I doubt you will find many more than
10 companies or corporations in China running z/OS on z/Series mainframes
outside the universities you mentioned.

The education part is 100% correct - there is one bank who recently hired 20
IT graduates. It would be nice to see them receiving the type of education
we are (were) used to in the West. Sadly with the travel and costs involved
it aint going to happen. Travel to the US is especially difficult due to the
'hit and miss' visa application system.

Steve,

I'd love to know where that information comes from. There are 7 universities
alone with z/Series running z/OS, and there are certainly far more than 10
companies running z/OS.

I agree that proportionally there are not many mainframe shops in China, but
I really question the source of your numbers.

India on the other hand seems to very little in the way of Mainframe
installation - I only know of one MF site, and the other sites seem to be a
small underground community. My friends there tell me it is because IBM had
very little presence in India after being asked to leave in the '70s.

In Asia (including India) there are no organisations like Share, CMG, etc
that allow partitioners to maintain and update their skills and knowledge -
I know that because I live in Asia - and it's unlikely that there will be
any time soon. Investment in specialised education is also fairly small
compared to Western countries, especially as most of it involves
international travel.

It's no surprise that search engines, forums, and web-sites are used so
heavily by the Eastern Hemisphere to look for this sort of information.
