It is not necessary. However OPENing can be risky.
The disk may crash if HOST system and OPEN system access the same disk
simultaneously, is it true, and other method can resolved it?
It is true. The only method that could prevent a risk is (should be)
included in your software. Open system software component should
communicate with the host component. The example is Tantia Backup
(formerly Harbor): open system agents write backup data to the disk,
while mainframe-based backup server reads it. The process is safe,
beacuse there is communication established between the agent and the
server. The communication path is over TCP/IP.
Works like a charm.
