Thanks john and Bob comment on the SMS...I think I have to read more manual right now and perform more TEST cases....

Bottom line is that Tommy needs to determine if he is going to manage everything non-system or a variation thereof, design the pools he wants to accomplish with his SMS-managed storage groups, code dataset exceptions for non-SMS allocations in the storage class routine and TEST all assumptions before activating anything. And, of course, read the manuals more! :-) Bob Richards -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of John Kington Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 12:57 PM To: IBM-MAIN@BAMA.UA.EDU Subject: Re: How can the ACS routine to bypass checking the storage volume datasets? Bob, >That was huge leap on your part to go from dataset placement being >honored to "what about if there is no space there?" I did post earlier in this thread asking why convert to SMS? I did have to make a huge leap that the PUBLIC volumes are for temporary datasets, PRIVATE volumes are dedicated to certain datasets and STORAGE volumes were for the remaining datasets. If the OP adds the PRIVATE volumes to the same storage group as the STORAGE volumes, he has just added the dedicated volumes to the STORAGE pool which means any non-temporary dataset could be allocated on them. If he goes further to use GUARANTEED SPACE so that his volser request is honored, he could get a failure trying to allocate to the formerly dedicated volume. You can not add PRIVATE (dedicated) volumes to STORAGE volumes if you want them to remain dedicated. That is really all that I was trying to say.
