Good point. But, from a user perspective, it's still tape. I used to work in a shop that had the following use for tape: Data interchange: with today's security issues, I would switch to SFTP. Back-Up/DR: still a valid use. SMF archive: we legally had to keep 7 years for tax reasons. That's a lot of DASD. Application Data: even with cheap DASD, people were writing to tape because nobody would change JCL. (And, the biggest reason was for master file back-up, because they didn't trust our back-ups). This is still growing. We had some real estate issues that were resolved by going to auto libraries, to VTS, to VTL, to higher density tape, and higher again. But, nobody was willing to address the real issues. When in doubt.
