Subject: HP to compete with S/390

Hewlett-Packard will face the S/390 head on when it unveils today its
new Superdome computer in a bid to up its standing in the lucrative
Unix server market. HP is expected to position Superdome with a host
of "e-services" to appeal to customers wishing to link business
operations housed on different servers, something it says IBM is
unwilling to do with its Unix servers lest it undermine sales of its
S/390 mainframe line.

... snip ...

pre-itanium

part of the issue had been that HP had acquired Convex. Convex had
done the scalable Examplar using "64-port" sci memory coherent with
two hp pa-risc chips/board (128 chips, processor in numa
configuration).

my understanding from the hp engineers was that superdome would be
somewhat smaller and more efficient (to implement, 32 processors) box
that they would move into the (convex) examplar customer segment
... as well as moving out into the more commercial world.

also from 9/12/2000 (same as the referenced item).

HP thinks big with Superdome servers

initially announced with 32 processors but with promise of 64
processors to come soon. also promised being able to upgrade to
itanium ... except itanium hadn't seen any update (late 90s had
various of the 370/390 software emulators thinking itanium would offer
significant emulation thruput).

one of your articles:

there is possible more progress now going on with itanium-2.

there is some comment about ibm being wary of pushing ibm's
competitive unix offerings too hard with commercial customers because
it might take market away from traditional mainframes.

there were actually only 200 people in the business):
