Hmmm......  I think you just described the "Replace" option of
ServerPac, which is what we've always used.  ISTR there is also an
"Upgrade" option that more nearly resembles the process of applying a
PUT or RSU maintenance "tape".  If that's how "Upgrade" works, I'd be
rather reluctant to try to apply it to a running target system.
